On January 14, girls from Troop 476 spent the day at the Liberty Science Center. The girls were given the tickets by Troop 227. They walked the high beams, worked in the lab on antibodies testing and salt water wedges, and experienced the touch tunnel, as well as many other exhibits. A special trip to Carlo's Bakery was made to end the day. Take a look at Troop 476's Liberty Science Center photo gallery.

Manahawkin Troop 583 loved the Cookie Rally so much that Cookie Mom Kathy held a 'Cookie Dough Event' on January 22. The troop met at her home to go over safety and played Headbanz (Girl Scout edition). They made their own clipboards for their order forms. They sampled the new Savanah Smiles and had many ideas on selling cookies and what they want to do with the money that they earn. Thank you, Ms. Kathy, for a great time and a learning experience. The girls are very excited to sell cookies this year. Check out Troop 583's Cookie Rally photo gallery.

One of Troop 34's Browies is moving out of state. They couldn't think of a better way to say goodbye than to throw her a party! The girls played freeze dance, jump rope, hula-hoops, had a congo line and even danced to the Cha-cha slide. The special Brownie, Rachel, was placed in the middle of a friendship circle. Each Brownie had to think of one word to best describe their friend. They were able to do this by passing a microphone around the circle. There were lots of group hugs and cupcakes at the end to celebrate. Rachel received a picture scrapbook signed by the troop and a special cookie cake to take home. The girls will miss her dearly. People come and go out of our lives, but Girl Scouts are friends forever! Troop 34 will never forget Rachel. Take a look at Troop 34's Farewell to Rachel photo galley.

Cadette Troop 171 and Brownie Troop 231 are sister troops. They teamed up this past week to welcome the newest Cadette Troop member, Arielle, to their troop family. Although Arielle is new to Troop 171, she is not new to Girl Scouting. She was last registered as a Girl Scout in 2009. Both Troops were so thrilled to welcome her to back to GSJS! The girls formed a bridge with their joined hands for Arielle to pass under. Each girl expressed words of welcome as she passed. They also joined in a Friendship Circle together. Take a look at their Welcome Arielle photo gallery! |

Troop 476 is lead by Maryann Pietruska and Debbie Wiedow. Nadine Foreman and Susan Gaglione lead Troop 227. The leaders of both troops walk together and were talking about how both troops only have 5 girls each. So, they decided to offer the girls activities together. Neither troop has had all of their girls attend an event yet but it is a great way to broaden the girls' scouting experience outside of the small troop. Troop 227 are 5th grade Juniors. Troop 476 is a multi-age troop that is working on the Junior level. The girls have benefited from the relationship and are planning to do many more activities together in the near future. Their first joint trip was to TD Bank for a tour. On January 14, 2012 girls from Troop 476 spent the day at Liberty Science Center. They had been given the tickets by Troop 227. Check out their Liberty Science photo gallery!

Approximately 73 people, including the girls of Cadette Troop 171, attended a motivational Silver Award Workshop on January 26 hosted by BJ Wood. The girls left the workshop excited about getting started on their Silver Award proposals. They were given a clear understanding of the scope of the undertaking though concrete examples. BJ got across the idea that this award will require work in a manner that was encouraging! She lead the girls through exercises that helped guide their thinking process in the right direction. BJ even gave the girls tips on how to transform an idea or a Service Project into a Silver Award Project.
BJ Wood said, "We have served about 180 girls thus far through our Silver Award workshops beginning in October of 2011 of which we have 92 girls in progress of completing their Silver Award. We also have 61 girls who have already completed their project and will be awarded their Silver Award this spring!" There are four more workshops scheduled for this year. Don't miss out on this great opportunity. - March 5th from 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm at the Program Activity Center in Farmingdale
- March 28th from 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm at the Ocean Service Center in Toms River
- May 3rd from 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm Ocean service Center,
- May 15th from 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm mat the Program activity Center

Troop 299 celebrated their mid-year award ceremony on Sunday, January 22nd with their families. They participated in a candle lighting ceremony, awards presentation, and followed it up with a song/dance performance by the girls for their families. The girls used the "larger than life" sized flowers because they sang Fireflies and because they feel that they have soared through Girl Scouting thus far. Most of the girls have been together for 4 or 5 years. Two of the girls have been together for 7 years. After the festivities, the girls helped to put together their “birthday in a box” packages as part of their commitment to community service. To top off the evening, a delicious cake was enjoyed by all as we sampled the new Savannah Smiles 100th anniversary cookies. We look forward to more fun for the 2nd half of the year. - Dawn, Troop 299 |
